The Debra Weiss Dance Company is known for its vibrant, joyful and entertaining programs that have delighted audiences since the 1980s. The company is known for its storytelling and living history programs, which take audiences back in time to the Victorian Era, colonial times, and the Jazz Age. DWDC’s programs celebrate diversity and inclusivity; its community outreach programs include audience participation (see photo). DWDC has performed at Lincoln Center, National Park Service sites such as the Statue of Liberty and Theodore Roosevelt’s Birthplace, museums, festivals, schools and theatres throughout the greater metro area, in upstate NY and in the Midwest.

Director, choreographer and dancer Debra Weiss began her dance training at age five in Chicago. She made her professional debut at 13 as a sprite in New York City Ballet’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. She moved to NYC and was in the professional ballet program at the Joffrey Ballet School. She performed for ballet and modern dance companies in New York and New Jersey, touring the US and Europe, before founding the Debra Weiss Dance Company in 1985. In 1988, Debra relocated to Nyack, NY, where she founded award- winning arts exposure programs for youth. She also created programs for museums and historic sites for the National Park Service, at sites such as the Statue of Liberty and Stony Point Battlefield. In 1994 Debra won a national honor, the Lawrence Epstein Choreography Award. In 2004 she was an artist in residence on the Big Island of Hawaii, where she choreographed and taught yoga. She subsequently created a CD, Meditations on Nature from Hawaii. In 2009 Debra created a DVD, Metamorphosis: A Yoga Journey through Greece with Debra Weiss, shot on location outdoors in Greece. Debra is a college professor and Certified Health Education Specialist who teaches health, nutrition and fitness. She holds an MA and EdD in Health Education from Teachers College, Columbia University.

Mission Statement

West Third Street Dance Corp. dba Debra Weiss Dance Company is a 501 (c ) 3 nonprofit based in Rockland County, NY, with a satellite office in Palm Beach County, FL. Its mission is to provide professional dance programs whose artistic excellence is embedded in core values of inclusiveness and collaboration. Its youth programs use arts exposure as a creative avenue for building self-esteem and teamwork skills.
